Stop Throwing Away Your Produce! Let's Talk About That Refrigerator Drawer.

You know that drawer in your refrigerator that's supposed to keep your fruits and vegetables fresh?

Yeah, the one where good intentions go to die.

You buy fresh produce on Sunday with every intention of eating healthier. By Thursday, you're digging through the drawer trying to figure out whether that cucumber is still a cucumber.

Been there!

But here's something I learned. Sometimes it's not how OLD your produce is. It's how you're storing it.

And a few little changes can make a big difference.

First, Stop Washing Everything Before You Put It Away

I know. You get home from the grocery store, you're feeling productive, and you want everything washed and ready.

But extra moisture can make certain fruits and vegetables spoil faster.

For things like berries, it's usually better to wait until you're ready to eat them before washing.

And if you do wash your produce ahead of time, make sure it's thoroughly dried before storing it.

Your Fruits and Vegetables Don't Always Play Nice Together

Did you know some fruits release a natural gas called ethylene as they ripen?

Apples, bananas, and ripe tomatoes are a few examples.

That gas can make certain vegetables spoil faster when they're stored nearby.

So while it might look pretty having everything together, your produce might have other plans.

That Paper Towel Trick Actually Works

For leafy greens, excess moisture can be a problem.

Try placing a clean, dry paper towel inside your storage container to absorb some of that moisture.

Just check it occasionally and replace it if it gets damp.

It's a simple little trick that can help keep your greens in better shape.

And Please, Check That Drawer Before You Go Grocery Shopping

This one might be the most important tip of all.

Before you head to the store, open that produce drawer and see what you've already got.

Because there's nothing quite like buying another bag of carrots when you've already got two hiding behind the lettuce.

Ask me how I know.

Here's the Bottom Line

You don't need a fancy refrigerator or a bunch of expensive containers to make your produce last longer.

Sometimes it's just knowing what to wash, what to keep separate, and remembering what's already in there.

And if something is past saving, well, at least we tried.

Now tell me, what's the one fruit or vegetable you buy with the best intentions but always end up throwing away?

Because I know I'm not the only one with a produce drawer full of broken promises.
